The bayonet, which has retained its relevance in modern military tactics, has remained largely unchanged in design since World War II. Even in recent conflicts such as the second Gulf War and the war in Afghanistan, bayonet attacks have proven to be successful. Some have customized their bayonets with a unique zebra-stripe pattern using aluminum and chrome paints of different reflectivities, finished with a tomato red candy coating.
